RHS Amaranthus Pygmy Torch Seeds 1000 Seeds, Dwarf Red Plume Half Hardy Annual for Borders and Containers

RHS Amaranthus Pygmy Torch Seeds by Mr Fothergill’s produce compact plants with bold upright crimson red plumes. This dwarf variety is ideal for beds, borders and containers where strong colour and structure are needed.

Pygmy Torch grows to around 45cm in height with a similar spread. The rich red flower spikes rise above deep green foliage and hold their colour well into autumn. The plumes remain attractive as they mature and can be left on the plant for extended seasonal interest.

This half hardy annual performs best in full sun in well drained soil. It thrives in warm conditions and benefits from regular watering during dry spells. Once established it provides reliable colour from June through to October.

The compact habit makes this variety suitable for smaller gardens and patio containers. It also works well towards the front or middle of borders where its upright shape creates contrast against softer planting. The flower heads are excellent for cutting and can be used fresh or dried in arrangements.

This variety has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit for dependable garden performance. It is part of the seed range produced by Mr Fothergill’s in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Gardeners can expect consistent germination and strong growth in UK conditions.

For outdoor sowing, sow from March to May in a prepared seed bed in flowering position. Sow thinly in rows 30cm apart and cover lightly with 0.5cm of fine soil. Firm gently and keep moist. Seedlings appear in 14 to 28 days. Thin to 30cm apart once large enough to handle.

For indoor sowing, sow from March to April in trays of seed compost. Cover with a fine layer of compost and keep at approximately 15 to 20°C. Remove cover when seedlings appear. Transplant 5cm apart in trays before hardening off gradually in late May. Plant out 30cm apart after risk of frost has passed.

RHS Amaranthus Pygmy Torch is a strong architectural plant that adds height, texture and deep colour to summer planting schemes.
